Biography
Sobey Wing (he, his him, siya) became connected to Kathara when Kathara Dance Theater Collective from Davao City came to Canada in 2002 for their Mindanaoan Culture and Arts Mission. It was then that he experienced training and performed under Kathara Davao’s founder and Artistic Director, Elenita Boots Cruz Dumlao and continued on with Kathara Canada founding members Babette Santos and Jr Guerrero in its early days. After Kathara became a registered society he became a board member. Thus far they’ve been involved in event organizing with Kathara as well as presenting workshops at events co-produced by Kathara with partners at the Center for Babaylan Studies. They also represented Kathara Society at Pamati Gathering 2017 held on Luzon with representatives from indigenous groups throughout the Philippines. They are joyful to be joined in the cultural work of Kathara Society by their sister Michelle Wing and niece and nephew.
Sobey brings their experience with collectives like Lotusland Collective, Asian Heritage Month and Tribal Harmonix Dance Collective and Earthdance Vancouver in their youth, and having sat on the boards of Eco Cafe Society, Pivot Legal Society, Youth Passageways and currently Koksilah Festival. They are also co-chair of the Cross-Cultural Protocols Working Group and a consultant with the Education and Consulting Collective of Youth Passageways organization. Their life work connects into supporting rite of passage initiation in culturally rooted forms in solidarity with indigenous peoples. They are also a participant in the Indigenous Food and Freedom School and a student in the study of systems thinking. Sobey is also curator of Visayan Culture, Maharlikan Travel Network, Kapwa in Unceded Coast Salish Territories, Decolonize Consciousness/Anti-Colonial Solidarity, Anti-Colonial Housing Network, Decolonizing Love, Decolonizing Travel on Facebook. A featured guest speaker on Cultivating Kapwa, Bespoken Bones, Practicing Community podcast and TEDx Georgia Straight.
